Warmer Kiwi Homes
80% OF THE COSTS TO INSTALL A NEW HEATING APPLIANCE IS NOW GOVERNMENT SUBSIDISED
At Varcoe, we believe that all New Zealanders have the right to a warm, healthy home. While we often associate heating a home purely with comfort, there are a range of additional advantages to maintaining a warm, healthy environment in the home. Cold, damp houses are not only a source of discomfort but can also cause health problems. Due to New Zealand’s climate, homes that lack adequate insulation and heating create the perfect environment for mould which can have serious respiratory health impacts on the home’s residents. This is especially true for children and the elderly.
Unfortunately, these cold and damp homes are not just a hypothetical issue – it is the reality for many New Zealanders. The New Zealand Government has taken action to remedy this issue, as like Varcoe, they believe all Kiwis deserve to live in healthy homes. This was the motivation for launching the “Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme” in 2017, an incredibly successful initiative to subsidise the cost of insulation and heating for Kiwis that need it the most. With the programme shattering its annual projections every year since its inception, the Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme’s funding has been extended to keep this positive momentum going.
So What is the Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme?
The Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme was launched in 2017 to provide much-needed subsidies for insulation and heating for low-income New Zealanders. Eligible households can receive a subsidy of 80% of the cost of insulation and up to 80% of the cost of a heater. This means that the homeowner only has to pay 20% – an incredibly attractive offer.
Furthermore, Warmer has teamed up with local community groups – meaning that in some areas, community funding may be able to further reduce the remaining 20% cost. This means that in some cases, the new heating solutions are 100% subsidised.
Who is Eligible For the Warmer Kiwi Homes Programme?
The Warmer Kiwi Homes grant is available for people who own and live in a home that was built before 2008. The owner must have a Community Service Card or live in an area that has been identified as low-income.
For the insulation grant, the home must not have underfloor or ceiling insulation.
For the heater grant, your home has underfloor and ceiling insulation that is up to ECCA standard and does not have any fixed heating in the home living areas.
