A single heat pump can transform one room. But once you have felt the difference in the lounge, the question always follows: what about the bedrooms, the office, the cold end of the hallway? That is where you hit the real decision, one unit per room, a multi room system, or full ducting through the whole house. Spend more than you need and it stings. Spend too little and you are back to shivering in the spare room. Here is how to work out which one your home actually needs.
The three ways to heat more than one room
There are really three routes, and they scale up in both coverage and cost.
A single unit heats one room from its own outdoor unit. A multi room system, also called a multi split, runs several indoor units off one shared outdoor unit, each room controlled on its own. A ducted system pipes heated and cooled air invisibly through the ceiling to the whole house from one central unit. Most New Zealand homes do not need the third one, which is the part that saves people a lot of money.
Start with the honest question, how many rooms
Before comparing systems, be honest about the problem you are solving, because comfort issues are almost always local. It is usually one room that bakes in summer, or a bedroom that never warms in winter, not the entire house at once.
If it really is just one problem room, a single unit is the answer, and a small heat pump in the 2.5 to 3.5 kilowatt range will handle a bedroom, office or lounge for a fraction of the cost of a whole-home setup. It installs in a few hours, needs no renovation, and you skip the big power bill of heating rooms you are not in. This is why single units are the standard across New Zealand, and for a lot of homes it is genuinely all you need.
When a multi room system makes sense
Once you want three or more rooms done, a multi room system usually becomes the smarter buy. Instead of a separate outdoor unit for every room, several indoor units share a single outdoor unit, which keeps the outside of your house tidy and often works out better value than a string of standalone units.
The advantages add up. Each room gets its own control, so you heat the bedroom at night and the living areas by day without running the whole system. You are not locked in either, because most systems let you start with two rooms and add more later, with the outdoor unit typically sized to run somewhere between two and six rooms in total. And because you have several units spreading the load, comfort tends to be more even than a single central system that can leave one corner warm and another cold. As a rough guide, a two to three room system generally starts somewhere around $4,000 to $6,000 installed. Not cheap, but well short of full ducting, and the power savings stack up over the years you stay in the house.
One nice detail: you do not have to use the same style everywhere. You can run a high wall in the living room, a floor console in a bedroom, and a discreet cassette where the look matters, all on the one multi room system.

When ducted is the right call
A ducted whole home system is the premium option, delivering one consistent temperature to every room through hidden ceiling vents, with no visible indoor units at all. It is superb for whole-home comfort and it is the natural choice for a new build or a major renovation, when the ducting can be designed in from the start.
The honest trade off is that ducted is less flexible on zoning than multi room. A multi room system gives you finer independent control room by room, whereas a central ducted system is happiest keeping the whole house at one temperature. So if precise per-room control and a lower upfront cost matter more to you than total invisibility, multi room often wins. If a seamless, equipment-free whole-home result is the goal and the budget is there, ducted is the one.
How to decide, quickly
A few questions usually settle it.
How many rooms genuinely need it? One points to a single unit, three or more points to multi room, the whole house from scratch points to ducted. How long are you staying? If it is ten years, the savings and comfort of a bigger system justify the spend, whereas for a couple of years a single unit makes more sense. New build or existing home? A new build is the ideal time for ducted, while an existing home is usually better suited to single units or multi room. And how much do you care about seeing the equipment? The less you want to see, the further you lean toward cassettes or ducting.

Will it cost more to run?
More units does not automatically mean bigger bills, and this is where multi room quietly shines. That per-room control is often more economical in practice than a central system that heats everywhere to keep one room comfortable. The upfront price is higher than a single unit, but the running cost is about how you use it, and a multi room system gives you the switches to keep it low.

Whichever route you take, capacity is what makes or breaks the result.
